فَقَدْ حَدَّثَنَاهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ثنا الْحَسَنُ ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ قَالَ
«أَبُو جَنْدَلِ بْنُ سُهَيْلِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو أَسْلَمَ قَدِيمًا بِمَكَّةَ فَحَبَسَهُ أَبُوهُ سُهَيْلِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو وَأَوْثَقَهُ فِي الْحَدِيدِ وَمَنَعَهُ الْهِجْرَةَ فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْحُدَيْبِيَةَ وَأَتَاهُ سُهَيْلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو فَقَاضَاهُ عَلَى مَا قَاضَاهُ عَلَيْهِ أَقْبَلَ أَبُو جَنْدَلٍ يَرْسُفُ فِي قُيُودِهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَرَدَّهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى أَبِيهِ؛ لِأَنَّ الصُّلْحَ كَانَ بَيْنَهُمْ ثُمَّ أَفْلَتَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَلَحِقَ بِأَبِي بَصِيرٍ وَهُوَ بِالْعِيصِ وَقَدِ اجْتَمَعَ إِلَيْهِ جَمَاعَةٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَكَانُوا كُلَّمَا مَرَّتْ بِهِمْ عِيرٌ لِقُرَيْشٍ اعْتَرَضُوهَا فَقَتَلُوا مَنْ قَدَرُوا عَلَيْهِ مِنْهُمْ وَأَخَذُوا مَا قَدَرُوا عَلَيْهِ مِنْ مَتَاعِهِمْ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ أَبُو جَنْدَلٍ مَعَ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ حَتَّى مَاتَ أَبُو بَصِيرٍ فَقَدِمَ أَبُو جَنْدَلٍ وَمَنْ كَانَ مَعَهُ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يَغْزُو مَعَهُ وَيُجَاهِدُ بَعْدَهُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى مَاتَ بِالشَّامِ فِي طَاعُونِ عَمَوَاسٍ سَنَةَ ثَمَانَ عَشْرَةَ فِي خِلَافَةِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ »

✧ Abu Jandal b. Suhayl b. Amr embraced Islam early in Makkah, but his father Suhayl b. Amr imprisoned him, bound him in iron, and prevented him from emigrating. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ camped at al-Hudaybiyyah and Suhayl b. Amr came to him and made a treaty with him as he did, Abu Jandal came dragging his chains to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned him to his father because the peace agreement was between them. Afterwards he escaped and joined Abu Basir, who was at al-Is, where a group of Muslims had gathered around him. Whenever a caravan of Quraysh passed by them, they intercepted it, killed those they could, and seized what goods they could. Abu Jandal remained with Abu Basir until Abu Basir died. Then Abu Jandal and the Muslims with him came to Madinah during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He continued to campaign with him and strive in the cause of Allah after him until he died in Syria in the plague of Amawas in the year eighteen, during the caliphate of Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ.
