✧ Umar's letter came to us when the plague struck Syria. Umar wrote to Abu Ubaidah that he had a need for which he could not do without him. Abu Ubaidah said, "May Allah have mercy on the Commander of the Faithful; he wants the survival of a people who are not to remain." Then Abu Ubaidah wrote back to him, "I am in an army of the Muslim armies. I do not wish to spare myself from what has befallen them." When he read the letter, he said, "Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return." The people said, "Abu Ubaidah has died." He said, "No." And he had written to him with firm resolution: "Move out from the land of al-Urdunn, for it is deep and pestilential, to the land of al-Jabiyah, for it is pleasant and moist." When the letter with firm resolution reached him, he ordered his caller to announce to the people to depart. When he was brought his mount to ride, he placed his foot in the stirrup, then folded his leg and said, "I think your disease has afflicted me." He said, "And Abu Ubaidah died, and the plague turned away from the people."
