✧ Ikrimah b. Abu Jahl fled on the day of the conquest heading to Yemen. Umm Hakim bt. al-Harith b. Hisham came forward—she was at that time a Muslim and married to Ikrimah b. Abu Jahl—and sought permission from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to go after her husband, and he granted her permission and gave him security. She set out with a Byzantine servant of hers, and he tried to seduce her, but she kept enticing him and drawing near to him until she reached some people from Makkah, then sought their help against him, and they bound him. She caught up with her husband in part of Tihamah, and he had boarded a ship. When he sat in it, he called upon al-Lat and al-Uzza. The people of the ship said: No one here may call upon anything except Allah alone sincerely. Ikrimah said: By Allah, if He is alone in the sea, then He is alone on land. I swear by Allah I will return to Muhammad ﷺ. So Ikrimah returned with his wife, entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and pledged allegiance to him, and he accepted it from him. A man from Hudhayl entered when Banu Bakr defeated his wife, fleeing, and she blamed him, declared him incapable, and reproached him for fleeing, so he said [rajaz verse]: If only you had seen us at al-Khandamah, when Safwan fled and Ikrimah fled, and they pressed upon us with surrendered swords, cutting every forearm and skull—you would not utter in blame even the slightest word. Urwah said: Ikrimah b. Abu Jahl was martyred on the day of Ajnadayn, among the Muslims, then of Quraysh, then of Banu Makhzum.
