✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to Uhud, al-Yaman b. Jabir, Abu Hudhayfah, and Thabit b. Waqsh b. Za'ura' remained in the fortresses with the women and children. One of them said to his companion, both being very old men: 'May you be bereft of your father! What are we waiting for? By Allah, none of us has left of his life except the panting of a donkey. We are but the owl of the people. Shall we not take our swords and join the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' So they entered among the Muslims, who did not know of them. As for Thabit b. Waqsh, the polytheists killed him. As for Abu Hudhayfah, the swords of the Muslims fell upon him and they killed him, not recognizing him. Hudhayfah said: 'My father, my father!' They said: 'By Allah, we did not recognize him,' and they were truthful. Hudhayfah said: 'May Allah forgive you, and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to pay his blood money, but Hudhayfah gave it as charity on behalf of the Muslims, and that increased his standing with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
