✧ Abu Jahl confronted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at al-Safa, harmed him, insulted him, and said about him what is disliked of faulting his religion and belittling him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not speak to him. A freedwoman of Abdullah b. Jud'an al-Taymi was in her dwelling above al-Safa, hearing that. Then he left him and went to the assembly of Quraysh at the Kaaba and sat with them. It was not long before Hamzah b. Abd al-Muttalib came, wearing his bow over his shoulder, returning from a hunt of his. When he did that, he would not pass by the assembly of Quraysh—and they were the most formidable—without stopping. That day he was a polytheist upon the religion of his people. The freedwoman came to him while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had risen to return to his house. She said to him, "O Umarah, if only you had seen what your nephew Muhammad encountered from Abu al-Hakam just now. He found him here, harmed him, insulted him, and reached what is disliked, then left him and went to the assembly of Quraysh at the Kaaba and sat with them, and did not speak to Muhammad." Hamzah was overcome with anger for what Allah willed of his honor. He went out quickly, not stopping at anyone as he used to do, intending to circumambulate the House, making for Abu Jahl to fall upon him. When he entered the mosque, he saw him sitting among the people, so he approached him until he stood over his head, raised the bow, and struck him on the head with a full blow. Men of Quraysh from Banu Makhzum stood up to Hamzah to help Abu Jahl. They said, "We see you, O Hamzah, have turned renegade." Hamzah said, "And what prevents me, when it has become clear to me from him? I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah and that what he says is true. By Allah, I will not desist, so stop me if you are truthful." Abu Jahl said, "Leave Abu Umarah alone, for I insulted his nephew with a foul insult." Hamzah continued in his Islam and followed, easing the burden of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When Hamzah embraced Islam, Quraysh knew that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had become strong and protected, and that Hamzah would defend him, so they refrained from some of what they had been doing and inflicting upon him. Sa'd said about that when he struck Abu Jahl, and he mentioned some rajaz verse that is not established, beginning with: "Taste, O Abu Jahl, what has covered you." Then Hamzah returned to his house, and Satan came to him and said, "You are the chief of Quraysh, you followed this renegade and left the religion of your forefathers. Death is better for you than what you have done." A doubt came upon Hamzah, and he said, "What have I done? O Allah, if it is right guidance, then make its confirmation in my heart; otherwise, make for me a way out from what I have fallen into." He spent a night such as he had never spent before from the whispering of Satan until morning. Then he went early to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O son of my brother, I have fallen into a matter from which I do not know the way out, and a situation like mine upon what I do not know whether it is right guidance or something else severe. Tell me a narration, for I have desired, O son of my brother, that you narrate to me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came forward and reminded him, admonished him, warned him, and gave him glad tidings. Allah cast faith into his soul as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said. He said, "I bear witness that you are truthful, with the testimony of one who affirms and acknowledges. So proclaim, O son of my brother, your religion. For by Allah, I would not love to have all that the sun shines upon while I am upon my former religion." Thus Hamzah was among those through whom Allah strengthened the religion.
