✧ We were with the Messenger of God ﷺ when his sandal strap broke. Ali lagged behind to mend it, and he walked a little, then said: «Indeed, among you is one who will fight for the interpretation of the Quran just as I fought for its revelation.» The people craned their necks for it, and among them were Abu Bakr and Umar. Abu Bakr said, "Is it I?" He said, «No.» Umar said, "Is it I?" He said, «No, but it is the mender of the sandal,» meaning Ali. So we went to him and gave him the good news, but he did not raise his head, as if he had already heard it from the Messenger of God ﷺ.
