✧ "On the Day of the Camel, I went out to look at the slain. Ali, al-Hasan b. Ali, Ammar b. Yasir, Muhammad b. Abi Bakr, and Zayd b. Suhan stood up and went around among the slain. Al-Hasan b. Ali saw a slain man lying face down. He turned him onto his back, then cried out and said, 'Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return. Quraysh rejoiced, by Allah.' His father said to him, 'Who is he, my son?' He said, 'Muhammad b. Talha b. Ubayd Allah.' He said, 'Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return. By Allah, he was a righteous young man.' Then he sat down gloomy and sad. Al-Hasan said to him, 'O father, I had forbidden you from this march, but so-and-so and so-and-so overcame your judgment.' He said, 'That was so, my son. I wish I had died twenty years before this.' Muhammad b. Hatib said: I stood up and said, 'O Commander of the Faithful, we are returning to Madinah and people will ask us about Uthman. What do you say about him?' Then Ammar b. Yasir and Muhammad b. Abi Bakr spoke, saying this and that. Ali said to them, 'O Ammar and O Muhammad, you say that Uthman was self-seeking and mismanaged authority, and you punished him, by Allah, but you did wrong in the punishment. You will come before a just Judge who will judge between you.' Then he said, 'O Muhammad b. Hatib, when you arrive in Madinah and are asked about Uthman, say: By Allah, he was among those who believed and did righteous deeds, then feared and believed, then feared and did good. And Allah loves the doers of good. And upon Allah let the believers rely.'"
