✧ I went on a military expedition with 'Umar to Syria. We stopped at a place, and a village chief came, asking to be directed to the Commander of the Believers, until he reached him. When the village chief saw 'Umar, he prostrated. 'Umar said: “What is this prostration?” He said: This is how we do with kings. 'Umar said: “Prostrate to your Lord who created you.” He said: O Commander of the Believers, I have prepared food for you, so come to me. 'Umar said: “Is there any of the Persians' images in your house?” He said: Yes. He said: “We have no need of your house, but go and send us a type of food, and do not add anything more to it.” He said: So he went and sent food to him, and he ate from it. Then 'Umar said to his servant: “Is there any of that nabidh in your water-skin?” He said: Yes. He said: “Send it to us.” He brought it and poured it into a vessel, then smelled it and found its smell repugnant. He poured water over it, then smelled it and found its smell repugnant. He poured water over it three times, then drank it. Then he said: “If something troubles you in your drink, do with it like this.” Muslim al-A'war—they abandoned him.
