✧ When 'Umar came to Syria, a ford presented itself to him. 'Umar dismounted from his camel, took off his leather socks—or he said his boots—then took hold of his mount's halter and waded through the ford. Abu 'Ubayda b. al-Jarrah said to him: You have done, O Commander of the Believers, a great deed in the eyes of the people of the land: you took off your leather socks, led your mount, and waded through the ford. He said: 'Umar struck his hand against Abu 'Ubayda's chest and said: “Oh, if only someone other than you had said it, O Abu 'Ubayda! You were the fewest of people, and Allah honored you with Islam. So whatever you seek honor through other than it, Allah will humiliate you, the Exalted.”
