✧ I said to ʿUrwa b. al-Zubayr, 'How long did the Prophet ﷺ stay in Makkah?' He said, 'Ten years.' I said, 'But Ibn ʿAbbas says, "He stayed for fifteen years."' He said, 'He took it from the saying of the poet.' Sufyan b. ʿUyayna said: Yahya b. Saʿid narrated to us, he said: I heard an old woman from the Ansar say: I saw Ibn ʿAbbas frequenting Ṣirma b. Qays to learn from him these verses [al-baḥr al-ṭawīl]: "He stayed in Quraysh for fifteen years, reminding, if only he had found a congenial friend. He would present himself to the people at the gatherings, but he saw no one to shelter him and no one to call. When he came to us and the journey's goal settled with him, he became happy and content with Ṭayba. He no longer feared the injustice of any wrongdoer, far away, nor feared any aggressor among people. We gave him our wealth from the best of what we owned, and ourselves in battle and in consolation. We show enmity to all those among people who show enmity to him, with justice, even if that loved one is congenial. We know that God is the only reality besides Him, and that the Book of God has become a guide.'"
