✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a military expedition, and the people were afflicted with severe hunger. The people asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for permission to slaughter some of their riding camels, and they said, 'Allah will help us reach our destination by means of them.' When Umar b. al-Khattab saw that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was about to grant them permission to slaughter some of their riding camels, he said, 'O Messenger of Allah, how will we be tomorrow when we meet the enemy hungry and on foot? But if you see fit, O Messenger of Allah, call upon the people to bring the remnants of their provisions.' So the people began to come with a handful of food and more than that. The one who brought the most came with a sa' of dates. He gathered it all. Then he stood and supplicated as Allah willed him to supplicate. Then he called the army with their vessels, then he ordered them to fill up whatever remained of the army. They did not leave any vessel without filling it, and the like of it remained. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molars appeared.
