✧ There was a Jew who had settled in Makkah and traded there. On the night in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was born, he said in a gathering of Quraysh: “O assembly of Quraysh, has a child been born among you tonight?” They said: “By Allah, we do not know.” He said: “Allah is greater. If it has escaped you, no harm, so look and remember what I say to you: tonight the Prophet of this last community has been born. Between his shoulders there is a mark, in which there are dense hairs like the mane of a horse. He will not suckle for two nights, because an ʿifrīt from the jinn inserted his two fingers into his mouth and prevented him from suckling.” The people dispersed from their gathering, amazed at his words and talk. When they reached their homes, each one of them told his family, and they said: “A boy has been born to ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and they have named him Muḥammad.” The people met and said: “Have you heard the words of the Jew, and has the birth of this boy reached you?” They went to the Jew and told him the news. He said: “Go with me so that I may look at him.” They went out and brought him to Āminah. He said: “Bring out your son to us.” She brought him out, and they uncovered his back, and he saw that mole. The Jew fell down unconscious. When he recovered, they said: “Woe to you, what is the matter?” He said: “By Allah, prophethood has departed from the Children of Israel. You have rejoiced with him, O assembly of Quraysh. By Allah, he will launch an assault upon you whose news will spread from the east to the west.” Among the group that day to whom the Jew said what he said were Hishām b. al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah, Musāfir b. Abī ʿAmr, ʿUbaydah b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah—a youth above the age of puberty—among a group of Banū Manāf and others from Quraysh.
