✧ A man from Banū ʿAbs called Khālid b. Sinān said to his people: “I shall extinguish for you the fire of al-Ḥadathān.” ʿUmārah b. Ziyād, a man of his people, said to him: “By Allah, you have never told us anything but the truth, O Khālid. So what is your business with the fire of al-Ḥadathān? You claim that you will extinguish it.” So he set out, and ʿUmārah b. Ziyād set out with him along with thirty of his people until they came to it, and it was emerging from a fissure in a mountain of a lava field called Ḥarrat Ashjaʿ. Khālid drew a line for them and seated them within it, and said: “If I am delayed from you, do not call me by my name.” It came out as if it were chestnut horses following one another. Khālid faced it and struck it with his staff, saying: “Badaʾ, badaʾ, badaʾ, all guidance. The son of the shepherd of goats claimed that I would not come out of it while my incisors are in my hand,” until he entered the fissure with it. He was delayed from them, and ʿUmārah b. Ziyād said: “By Allah, if your companion were alive, he would have come out to you by now.” They said: “Call him by his name.” They said: “He forbade us to call him by his name.” But they called him by his name. He came out to them holding his head, and said: “Did I not forbid you to call me by my name? By Allah, you have killed me. So bury me, and when donkeys pass by you, among them a tailless donkey, then dig me up, for you will find me alive.” So they buried him. Then donkeys passed by them, among them a tailless donkey, and we said: “Dig him up, for he commanded us to dig him up.” ʿUmārah b. Ziyād said: “Do not let Muḍar say that we dig up our dead. By Allah, we will never dig him up.” He had told them that in the saddlebag of his wife there were two tablets, and if any matter became unclear to them, they should look at them, for they would see what they asked about. And he said: “No menstruating woman should touch them.” When they returned to his wife, they asked her about them, and she brought them out while she was menstruating, so the knowledge that was in them was lost. Abū Yūnus said: Simāk b. Ḥarb said: The Prophet ﷺ was asked about him, and he said: “That was a prophet whom his people neglected.” And Abū Yūnus said: Simāk b. Ḥarb said: The son of Khālid b. Sinān came to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: “Welcome to the son of my brother.” Al-Ḥākim said:
