حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حَمْشَاذَ الْعَدْلُ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ أَنْبَأَ عَمَّارُ بْنُ أَبِي عَمَّارٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّ مَلَكَ الْمَوْتِ كَانَ يَأْتِي النَّاسَ عِيَانًا فَأَتَى مُوسَى بْنَ عِمْرَانَ فَلَطَمَهُ مُوسَى فَفَقَأَ عَيْنَهُ فَعَرَجَ مَلَكُ الْمَوْتِ فَقَالَ يَا رَبِّ إِنَّ عَبْدَكَ مُوسَى فَعَلَ بِي كَذَا وَكَذَا وَلَوْلَا كَرَامَتُهُ عَلَيْكَ لَشَقَقْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ اللَّهُ إِيتِ عَبْدِي مُوسَى فَخَيِّرْهُ بَيْنَ أَنْ يَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى مَتْنِ ثَوْرٍ فَلَهُ بِكُلِّ شَعْرَةٍ وَارَتْهَا كَفُّهُ سَنَةٌ وَبَيْنَ أَنْ يَمُوتَ الْآنَ فَأَتَاهُ فَخَيَّرَهُ فَقَالَ مُوسَى فَمَا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ فَالْآنَ إِذًا فَشَمَّهُ شَمَّةً فَقَبَضَ رُوحَهُ وَرَدَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ بَصَرَهُ فَكَانَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ يَأْتِي النَّاسَ فِي خِفْيَةٍ

Translation

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The Angel of Death used to come to people openly. He came to Moses son of Imran, and Moses slapped him and gouged out his eye. The Angel of Death ascended and said: 'O Lord, Your servant Moses did such and such to me, and were it not for his honor with You, I would have made it hard for him.' Allah said: 'Go to My servant Moses and give him the choice between placing his hand on the back of an ox, for every hair covered by his palm he gets a year, and dying now.' So he came to him and gave him the choice. Moses said: 'What comes after that?' He said: 'Death.' He said: 'Then now.' So he took a whiff of him and seized his soul, and Allah restored his sight to him. After that he used to come to people in concealment."
