أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ الشَّافِعِيُّ ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ ثنا أَبُو حُذَيْفَةَ ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَابِسٍ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ وَسُئِلَ

عَنْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ {إِنَّهَا تَرْمِي بِشَرَرٍ كَالْقَصَرِ} [المرسلات 32] قَالَ «كُنَّا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ نَقْصُرُ الْخَشَبَ ذِرَاعَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةً فَنَرْفَعُهُ فِي الشِّتَاءِ وَنُسَمِّيهِ الْقَصْرَ» قَالَ وَسَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ وَسُئِلَ عَنْ {جِمَالَتٌ صُفْرٌ} [المرسلات 33] قَالَ «حِبَالُ السُّفُنِ يُجْمَعُ بَعْضُهَا إِلَى بَعْضٍ حَتَّى يَكُونَ كَأَوْسَاطِ الرِّحَالِ»

✧ Regarding this verse: {Indeed, it throws off sparks [as big] as palaces} [al-Mursalāt: 32], he said: “In the pre-Islamic era we used to cut wood into two or three cubits and raise it up in winter, and we called it a palace (al-qaṣr).” He said: And I heard Ibn ʿAbbās when he was asked about {Yellow camels} [al-Mursalāt: 33], he said: “The ropes of ships, joined one to another until they become like the middles of camel saddles.”
