✧ I performed the Hajj once and stayed in one of the streets of Kufa. I went out on a dark night, and suddenly there was a caller crying out in the middle of the night, saying: 'My God, by Your might and majesty, I did not intend by disobeying You to oppose You. I disobeyed You when I disobeyed You, and I am not ignorant of that, but a sin presented itself, aided by my wretchedness, and Your covering that You let down over me deceived me. I disobeyed You in my ignorance, and I opposed You in my ignorance. Now who can rescue me from Your punishment, and to whose rope can I cling if You cut Your rope from me? Alas for my youth, alas for my youth!' When he finished his words, I recited a verse from the Book of Allah: {Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are angels, stern and severe} [al-Tahrim 6]. Then I heard a violent movement, and after that I heard no sound. I went on. The next day I returned to my path, and there I saw a funeral bier that had been laid out, and an old woman. I asked her about the matter of the deceased, and she did not know me. She said: 'A man passed by here last night – may Allah not reward him except with what he deserves for my son. My son was standing praying, and he recited a verse from the Book of Allah. When my son heard it, his bile vessel burst, and he fell down dead.'
