✧ The Muslims used to love that the Romans prevail over Persia because they were People of the Book, while the polytheists used to love that Persia prevail over the Romans because they were people of idols. The Muslims mentioned that to Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr mentioned it to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: "Indeed, they will soon be defeated." Abu Bakr mentioned that to them, and they said, "Set a term between us and you. If they prevail, you will have such and such, and if we prevail, we will have such and such." So he set a term of five years, but they did not prevail. Abu Bakr mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: "Why did you not make it—I think he said—less than ten?" He said, "Then the Romans prevailed after that. That is His saying, Exalted is He: {Alif Lam Mim. The Romans have been defeated in the nearest land, and they, after their defeat, will prevail} [Al-Rum 2]. He said: The Romans were defeated, then they prevailed afterwards. To Allah belongs the command before and after. And on that day the believers will rejoice in Allah's victory."
