✧ We went out for a funeral at the gate of Damascus with Abu Umamah al-Bahili. When he prayed over the funeral and they began to bury it, Abu Umamah said: O people, you have entered morning and evening in a dwelling where you divide good deeds and evil deeds, and you are about to depart from it to another dwelling, and it is this—he pointed to the grave—the house of solitude, the house of darkness, the house of worms, and the house of constriction, except what Allah expands. Then you move from it to the stations of the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, you are in some of those stations until a matter from Allah’s command overwhelms the people, and faces become white and faces become black. Then you move from it to another dwelling, and a severe darkness overwhelms the people. Then the light is divided, and the believer is given light, while the disbeliever and the hypocrite are left and given nothing. This is the parable that Allah, exalted is He, struck in His Book: {Or like darknesses in a deep sea covered by waves, above which are waves, above which are clouds—darknesses, some above others. When he stretches out his hand, he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allah has not granted light has no light} [al-Nur 40]. The disbeliever and the hypocrite do not benefit from the believer’s light, just as the blind do not benefit from the sight of the seeing. The hypocrite says to those who believe: {Wait for us, so that we may acquire some of your light. It will be said, “Go back behind you and seek light”} [al-Hadid 13]. This is the deception with which the hypocrite deceives. Allah, may He be glorified, said: {They seek to deceive Allah, but He deceives them} [al-Nisa' 142]. So they return to the place where the light was divided, but they find nothing, so they turn back to them while a wall with a gate has been struck between them; its interior contains mercy, and its exterior, from its direction, contains punishment. They call out to them: Were we not with you? Did we not pray with your prayers and raid with your raids? {They will say, “Yes, but you tempted yourselves, and you waited, and you doubted, and false hopes deceived you until the command of Allah came, and the Deceiver deceived you concerning Allah”} [al-Hadid 14]. He recited until His saying: {And wretched is the destination} [al-Hadid 15].
