✧ I asked him about the spoils (al-anfal). He said: "It was revealed concerning us on the day of Badr. The people were in three positions: one third fighting the enemy, one third gathering the goods and taking captives, and one third by the tent guarding the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When they gathered the goods, they disputed about them. Those who gathered and took them said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted each of us what he acquired; it is ours, not yours.' Those fighting the enemy and pursuing them said, 'By Allah, had it not been for us, you would not have obtained it. We occupied the enemy.' The guards said, 'By Allah, you are not more entitled to it than we are. We saw the chance to fight the enemy when Allah delivered their backs to us—to take the goods when no one could prevent it—but we feared the enemy's raid on the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so we stood in front of him.'" He said: "So Allah took it out of our hands and gave it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who divided it equally. There was no one-fifth (khums) on that day. In it was fear of Allah, obedience to Him, obedience to His Messenger ﷺ, and reconciliation of hearts."
