✧ It reached him that Abu Ubaydah was besieged in Syria and that the people had gathered against him. Umar wrote to him: Peace be upon you. Now then: No station of hardship befalls a believing servant but Allah makes after it relief, and hardship will never overcome two eases. {O you who believe, be patient, endure, and remain stationed, and fear Allah so that you may succeed} [Al Imran 200]. He said: So Abu Ubaydah wrote back to him: Peace be upon you. Now then: Indeed, Allah says in His Book: {Know that the life of this world is play and amusement and adornment and boasting among you and multiplication in wealth and children} [al-Hadid 20]—to the end of it. He said: So Umar went out with his letter, sat on the pulpit, and read it to the people of Madinah. Then he said: O people of Madinah, Abu Ubaydah is only alluding to you: desire jihad.
