✧ He said: 'The Prophet ﷺ was not given victory in any battle as he was given on the day of Uḥud.' We objected to that, so Ibn ʿAbbās said: 'Between me and whoever disputes this is the Book of Allah Almighty. Allah Almighty says concerning the day of Uḥud: "And Allah certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them by His permission" (Āl ʿImrān 152). Ibn ʿAbbās said: 'Al-ḥiss means killing.' "Until you lost courage and disputed about the command and disobeyed after He had shown you what you love. Among you are some who desire this world and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you away from them to test you, and He has pardoned you, and Allah is the possessor of bounty for the believers" (Āl ʿImrān 152). He meant the archers by this. The Prophet ﷺ had stationed them in a position and said: "Protect our rear. If you see us being killed, do not come to help us; and if you see us taking spoils, do not share with us." When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions gained spoils and overran the camp of the polytheists, all the archers left their position and entered the camp to take booty. The ranks of the Prophet's Companions had engaged, and they were like this—and he interlaced his fingers—and they became entangled. When the archers abandoned that gap where they had been, the cavalry entered from that spot upon the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and they struck one another, became entangled, and many Muslims were killed. At the beginning of the day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions had the upper hand, until seven or nine of the banner-bearers of the polytheists were killed. The Muslims fell back toward the mountain, but they did not reach what people call al-Ghābah; rather, it was below al-Mihrās. Satan shouted: "Muḥammad has been killed!" They did not doubt that it was true. We remained in that state, not doubting that he had been killed, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appeared between the two Saʿds. We recognized him by his swaying gait when he walked. We rejoiced as if nothing had afflicted us. He climbed toward us, saying: "Allah's anger is severe against a people who bloodied the face of their Prophet." And another time he said: "O Allah, it is not for them to prevail over us," until he reached us. He stayed a while, then Abū Sufyān shouted from the foot of the mountain: "Exalted be Hubal! Exalted be Hubal!"—meaning his deity. "Where is Ibn Abī Kabshah? Where is Ibn Abī Quḥāfah? Where is Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb?" ʿUmar said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I answer him?" He said: "Yes." When he said "Exalted be Hubal," ʿUmar said: "Allah is most high and most mighty." Abū Sufyān said: "O Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, this is a day of silence." He repeated: "Where is Ibn Abī Kabshah? Where is Ibn Abī Quḥāfah? Where is Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb?" ʿUmar said: "This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, this is Abū Bakr, and here I am, ʿUmar." Abū Sufyān said: "A day for the day of Badr; days alternate, and war is a back-and-forth." ʿUmar said: "Not equal! Our dead are in Paradise, and your dead are in the Fire." He said: "You claim that; then we have been disappointed and lost." Then Abū Sufyān said: "You will find mutilation among your dead, and that was not by the counsel of our chiefs." Then the zeal of the Age of Ignorance overtook him, and he said: "As for that, if it happened, we did not dislike it."
