✧ Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq entered the mosque while ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb was addressing the people. He went to the room in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had died, uncovered his face from the striped Yemeni cloak with which he was shrouded, looked at him, leaned over to kiss his face, and said: 'By Allah, Allah will not cause you to die twice after this death of yours, after which you will never die.' Then he went out to the mosque while ʿUmar was speaking to the people. Abū Bakr said: 'Sit down, O ʿUmar.' He refused. He spoke to him twice or three times, but he refused. Then he stood up and recited the testimony of faith. When he finished, he said: 'Now then, whoever worshipped Muḥammad, Muhammad ﷺ has died; and whoever worshipped Allah, Allah is ever-living and never dies.' Then he recited: 'And We did not grant immortality to any human before you' (Al-Anbiyāʾ 34), and 'Muḥammad is but a messenger; messengers have passed away before him' (Āl ʿImrān 144), and he recited up to 'the grateful.' No sooner had he recited it than the people became certain of the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so much so that someone said: 'The people did not know that this verse had been revealed until Abū Bakr recited it.' Al-Zuhrī said: Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib informed me that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: 'When Abū Bakr recited it, I was stunned and fell to the ground, and I became certain that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had died.'
