✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that charity be given. A man came with some of this saḥl—Sufyān said: meaning the bad dates—and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Who brought this?” And no one would bring anything except that it would be attributed to the one who brought it. Then the verse was revealed: {And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes} [Al-Baqarah 267]. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade two types of dates from being taken as charity: the Juʿrūr and the color of Ḥubayq. Al-Zuhrī said: “The two types from the dates of Madinah.” Sulaymān b. Kathīr concurred with him on the authority of al-Zuhrī.
