✧ He used to recite: {When those who disbelieved put in their hearts pride, the pride of ignorance} [al-Fath 26] and if you had been as zealous as they were, the Sacred Mosque would have been corrupted. {So Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger} [al-Fath 26]. This reached Umar and he was upset. He sent for him while he was treating a camel of his with tar. He entered upon him and called people from his companions, including Zayd b. Thabit. He said: Who recites Surah al-Fath among you? Zayd recited according to our reading today. Umar was harsh with him. Ubayy said: May I speak? He said: Speak. You know that I used to enter upon the Prophet ﷺ and he would teach me while you were at the door. If you wish that I teach people as he taught me, I will, otherwise I will not teach a single letter as long as I live. He said: Teach the people.
