✧ From Nubayh al-Anazi, from Ibn Abbas, who said: While I was reciting a verse from the Book of Allah ﷻ as I walked on a road in Madinah, a man called from behind me: Follow Ibn Abbas. He was Amir al-Mu'minin Umar. I said: I follow you based on Ubayy b. Kab. He said: Did he teach you as I heard you recite? I said: Yes. He said: Send a messenger with me. He said: Go with him to Ubayy b. Kab and see if Ubayy recites like that. I went with his messenger to Ubayy b. Kab. I said: O Ubayy, I recited a verse from the Book of Allah and Umar b. al-Khattab called from behind: Follow Ibn Abbas. I said: I follow you based on Ubayy b. Kab. He sent his messenger with me. Did you teach it to me as I recited? Ubayy said: Yes. The messenger returned to him. I went about my business. Umar went to Ubayy. I found that he had finished washing his head while his slave girl was combing his beard with a comb. Ubayy said: Welcome, Amir al-Mu'minin. Have you come as a visitor or seeking a need? Umar said: Seeking a need. He sat with two servants until he finished his beard and she combed the right side of his forelock, then the left. When finished, he turned to Umar and said: What is the need of Amir al-Mu'minin? Umar said: O Ubayy, why do you make people despair? Ubayy said: Amir al-Mu'minin, I received the Quran from Jibril while it was fresh. Umar said: By Allah, you will not stop and I will not be patient, three times, then he stood and left.
