✧ That 'Umar b. al-Khattab came out to a gathering while he was in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and they were mentioning an expedition of the expeditions that had perished in the cause of Allah. One speaker among them said, 'They are the workers of Allah; they perished in His cause, and their reward has become incumbent upon Him.' Another speaker said, 'Allah knows best about them; theirs is what they reckoned.' When they saw 'Umar approaching, leaning on his staff, they fell silent. 'Umar approached until he greeted them, then said, 'What were you discussing?' They said, 'We were mentioning this expedition that perished in the cause of Allah. One of us says, "They are the workers of Allah; they perished in His cause, and their reward has become incumbent upon Him." Another says, "Allah knows best about them; theirs is what they reckoned."' 'Umar said, 'Allah knows best. Among people are those who fight while their only concern is fighting, so they cannot do anything but that. Among people are those who fight for show and reputation. Among people are those who fight seeking the face of Allah. Those are the martyrs. Every one of them will be resurrected upon that which he died upon. By Allah, no soul knows what will be done with it. This man is not the one who has made clear to us that he has been forgiven his past and future sins ﷺ.'
