✧ He narrated to him: While I was sitting in the Ḥijr, a man came to me and asked me about {the charging steeds, panting} [al-ʿĀdiyāt 1]. I said to him: "The horses when they raid in the path of Allah, then they return to the night, and they prepare their food and kindle their fire." He turned away from me and went to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, who was under the drinking place of Zamzam, and asked him about the charging steeds. He said: Did you ask anyone about it before me? He said: Yes, I asked Ibn ʿAbbās about it. He said: They are the horses when they raid in the path of Allah. He said: Go and call him for me. When he stood at his head, he said: You give fatwā to the people without knowledge. By Allah, the first military expedition in Islam was Badr, and we had only two horses with us: a horse belonging to al-Zubayr and a horse belonging to al-Miqdād b. al-Aswad. So how can it be the charging steeds, panting? {The charging steeds, panting} [al-ʿĀdiyāt 1] are only from ʿArafah to al-Muzdalifah and from al-Muzdalifah to Minā, {then they raise dust thereby} [al-ʿĀdiyāt 4] when they trample it with their feet and hooves. Ibn ʿAbbās said: So I withdrew from my statement and returned to what ʿAlī said.
