✧ We set out on an expedition from Madinah, intending Constantinople, and over the army was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Khālid b. al-Walīd. The Byzantines had backed themselves against the wall of the city. A man charged against the enemy. The people said, "Stop, stop! There is no god but Allah! He is throwing himself into destruction with his own hands." Abū Ayyūb said, "This verse was revealed concerning us, the Helpers. When Allah granted victory to His Prophet and made Islam prevail, we said, 'Let us remain with our wealth and put it in order.' Then Allah ﷻ revealed: 'And spend in the way of Allah, and do not throw yourselves into destruction with your own hands' (al-Baqarah 195). Throwing ourselves into destruction means remaining with our wealth and putting it in order while abandoning jihad."

Notes

machine translationAbū ʿImrān said: Abū Ayyūb did not cease to strive in the cause of God until he was buried in Constantinople. "This is an authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith meeting the criteria of the two Shaykhs, though they did not narrate it" - [it meets] the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
