✧ He heard Sahl b. al-Hanzaliyyah mention that they traveled with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hunayn and prolonged the journey until it was evening. The prayer time came and a horseman came and said: “O Messenger of Allah, I went ahead of you until I ascended such-and-such a mountain, and there I saw Hawazin with their entire gathering, their women, their camels, and their sheep, gathered at Hunayn.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said: “That is the spoils of the Muslims tomorrow, if Allah wills.” Then he said: “Who will guard us tonight?” Anas b. Marthad al-Ghanawi said: “I will, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Mount.” So he mounted a horse of his and came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “Face this mountain pass until you are at its top, and do not flee tonight from your position.” When morning came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to his prayer place and prayed two rak'ahs, then said: “Have you sensed your horseman?” A man said: “We have not sensed him.” Then he called the prayer, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept looking toward the mountain pass until he finished his prayer, then said: “Rejoice, for your horseman has come.” He said: We began looking at the shadows of the trees in the mountain pass, and there he came until he stood before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and greeted him. He said: “I went until I was at the top of this mountain pass where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me. When morning came, I looked down upon the two passes and saw no one.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “Did you dismount tonight?” He said: “No, except to pray or to relieve myself.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “You have made it obligatory, so there is no harm if you do not perform any deed after it.” This chain of transmission from its beginning to its end is authentic according to the conditions of the two Shaykhs, except that they did not include the narrations of Sahl b. al-Hanzaliyyah because of the scarcity of narrations from the Successors from him, and he is among the senior Companions, as I mentioned earlier. On the condition of al-Bukhari and Muslim, but they did not transmit from Sahl, and he is a senior Companion.
