✧ I heard Ibn al-Khaṣāṣiyah say: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to pledge allegiance to him upon Islam, and he stipulated upon me: “You testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, and you perform the five prayers, fast Ramadan, give the zakah, perform the Hajj to the House, and wage jihad in the path of Allah.” He said: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, as for two of them, I cannot endure them. As for the zakah, I have no property except ten camels; they are my family's mounts and their carriers. As for jihad, they claim that whoever turns back has incurred wrath from Allah, so I fear if fighting is present with me, I would hate death and my soul would lose courage.” He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ withdrew his hand, then moved it, then said: “No charity and no jihad, so with what will you enter Paradise?” He said: Then I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I pledge allegiance to you,” so he accepted my pledge upon all of them.
