✧ Umar b. al-Khattab went out to Syria, and with us was Abu Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah. They came to a ford, and Umar was on a she-camel of his. He dismounted from it, took off his two leather socks, placed them on his shoulder, took hold of his she-camel’s halter, and led it through the ford. Abu Ubaydah said, “O Commander of the Believers, are you doing this? You take off your two leather socks, put them on your shoulder, take your she-camel’s halter, and lead it through the ford? It would not please me for the people of the town to see you like this.” Umar said, “Oh! No one but you would say this, Abu Ubaydah. I made it a lesson for the community of Muhammad ﷺ. We were the most humiliated people, and Allah honored us with Islam. So whenever we seek honor through anything other than what Allah honored us with, Allah will humiliate us.”
