Notes

machine translationThis is an authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith meeting the criteria of the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhārī and Muslim), though they did not record it. A debate took place concerning it between me and our teacher Abū Muḥammad al-Sabīʿī, for he rejected it and said: "People only narrated it from Abū Khālid, from al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh, from al-Ḥakam. So where did your teacher get it from, from Shuʿbah?" I said: "Consider what you are saying, for our teacher brought both chains of transmission together." It was as though I had stuffed a stone into his mouth.
