machine translationHe said: I said, "Did you yourself hear it from Muʿādh?" The people rebuked me, but he said, "Leave him, for he has not spoken badly. Yes, I heard it from Muʿādh b. Jabal, and Muʿādh claimed that he heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." This ḥadīth is authentic (ṣaḥīḥ), and trustworthy narrators have transmitted it, yet the two (al-Bukhārī and Muslim) did not both record it with this wording. What I think, and Allah knows best, is that they both omitted it because of Hiṣṣān b. Kāhil, who is also said to be Ibn Kāhin, for the only one known to narrate from him is Ḥumayd b. Hilāl al-ʿAdawī. [Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned that Qurrah b. Khālid also narrated from him.] Yet both of them have recorded from a group of trustworthy narrators who have only one narrator transmitting from them, so this obliges them to record the like of this one as well, and Allah knows best. Hiṣṣān was declared trustworthy by Ibn Ḥibbān.
