✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man from Banu Makhzum to collect zakat, and he said to Abu Rafi‘: Accompany me so that we may get some of it. He said: No, not until I come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He went to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him, and he said: Zakat is not lawful for us, and the mawali of a people are of themselves.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationAl-Ḥakam narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Shuʿbah narrated it from al-Ḥakam, from Ibn Abī Rāfiʿ, from his father. ʿAmr b. Marzūq said, from Shuʿbah, the same; and likewise Usāmah said, from Shuʿbah. But al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh said, from al-Ḥakam, that Abū Rāfiʿ asked the Prophet ﷺ for something of the charity (ṣadaqah), and he said: "It is not lawful for the Prophet ﷺ, nor for any of his family, nor for their freed slaves." So it would be mursal (with the Companion omitted from the chain).
