حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ الزَّاهِدُ ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ هَارُونَ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ الْمَقَابِرِيُّ الزَّاهِدُ وَأَبُو مُصْعَبٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ قَالَا ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ثنا الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ
أَنَّهُ شَهِدَ جِنَازَةً صَلَّى عَلَيْهَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ فَذَهَبَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ مَعَ مَرْوَانَ حَتَّى جَلَسَا فِي الْمَقْبَرَةِ فَجَاءَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيُّ فَقَالَ لِمَرْوَانَ أَرِنِي يَدَكَ فَأَعْطَاهُ يَدَهُ فَقَالَ قُمْ فَقَامَ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَرْوَانُ لِمَ أَقَمْتَنِي؟ فَقَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا رَأَى جِنَازَةً قَامَ حَتَّى يُمَرَّ بِهَا وَيَقُولُ «إِنَّ الْمَوْتَ فَزَعٌ» فَقَالَ مَرْوَانُ أَصَدَقَ يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَمَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تُخْبِرَنِي؟ قَالَ كُنْتَ إِمَامًا فَجَلَسْتَ فَجَلَسْتُ

✧ He witnessed a funeral prayer led by Marwan b. al-Hakam. Abu Hurayrah went with Marwan until they sat in the cemetery. Abu Sa'id al-Khudri came and said to Marwan, "Give me your hand." Marwan gave him his hand. Abu Sa'id said, "Stand up." Marwan stood, then asked, "Why did you make me stand?" He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he saw a funeral procession, would stand until it passed, and he would say, 'Indeed, death is a fright.'" Marwan said, "Did he speak the truth, O Abu Hurayrah?" He replied, "Yes." Marwan said, "What prevented you from telling me?" Abu Hurayrah said, "You were the leader and sat, so I sat."
