✧ "No servant commits a sin, then performs wudu' and prays two rak'ahs, then asks Allah for forgiveness, except that He forgives him." Then he recited this verse: {And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins} [Al 'Imran: 135], and the other verse: {And whoever does evil or wrongs himself} [An-Nisa': 110].

✧ When I heard a hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Allah benefited me through it as He willed. And when someone other than him narrated to me, I made him swear that he heard it from him, then I believed him. Abu Bakr narrated to me — and Abu Bakr ؓ spoke the truth — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:... then he mentioned something similar to the hadith of Shu'bah.

✧ "Abu Bakr ؓ sent for me after the Battle of al-Yamamah, and 'Umar ibn al-Khattab ؓ was with him. He said: 'This man came to me and informed me that the killing has intensified among the Quran reciters in this place — meaning the Day of al-Yamamah — and I fear that the killing will intensify among the Quran reciters in other places, and so the Quran will be lost. I have decided that you should compile it.' I said to him — meaning to 'Umar —: 'How can we do something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do?' 'Umar said to me: 'By Allah, it is good.' 'Umar kept persuading me until Allah opened my chest to what He had opened his chest, and I saw in it what he saw. You are a sensible man, you used to write down the revelation for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we do not accuse you, so compile it.'"

✧ I heard Abu Bakr ؓ delivering a sermon. He mentioned the Prophet ﷺ and wept, then said — meaning the Prophet ﷺ —: 'You must be truthful, for truthfulness leads to righteousness, and both are in Paradise. Beware of lying, for lying leads to wickedness, and both are in the Fire. Ask Allah for certainty and well-being, for people have not been given anything after certainty better than well-being' — or he said 'forgiveness' — 'Do not envy one another, do not hate one another, do not cut off relations with one another, do not turn your backs on one another, and be, O servants of Allah, brothers.'

✧ Abu Bakr ؓ, when he mentioned the Day of Uhud, wept and then said: 'That entire day belonged to Talhah.' Then he began to narrate, saying: 'I was the first to return on the Day of Uhud. I saw a man fighting alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, protecting him — and I think he said: defending him. I said: "Be Talhah, since I missed what I missed." I said: "If only he were a man from my people, that would be dearer to me." Between me and the east there was a man I did not recognize, and I was closer to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than he, but he was moving swiftly in a way I could not. Then I saw it was Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah. We reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; his front tooth had been broken, his face had been wounded, and two rings of the helmet had pierced his cheeks. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Take care of your companion," meaning Talhah. But he did not pay attention to his words, and I went to remove that from his face. Abu 'Ubaydah said: "I adjure you by my right to leave me." So I left him. He disliked touching them with his hand, lest he hurt the Prophet ﷺ. He bit down on them with his mouth and extracted one of the rings, and his front tooth fell with the ring. I went to do what he had done, but he said: "I adjure you by my right to leave me." He did the same as the first time, and his other front tooth fell with the ring. Abu 'Ubaydah was among the most handsome of people with broken teeth. We attended to the Prophet ﷺ, then we went to Talhah in one of those pits. There he was, with seventy-some wounds — or fewer or more — between stabs, arrows, and strikes, and his finger had been cut off. So we attended to him.'

✧ O Messenger of Allah, command me with something I can say in the morning and the evening. He said: 'Say: O Allah, Knower of the unseen and the seen, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Lord and Owner of everything, I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of Satan and his trap. Say it in the morning, in the evening, and when you go to bed.'
