✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a delegation of Hawazin came to him and said, "O Muhammad, we are of the same root and tribe, and such affliction has befallen us as is not hidden from you, so bestow favor upon us, may Allah bestow favor upon you." He said, "Choose from your properties or from your women and children." They said, "You have given us the choice between our lineages and our properties; rather we choose our women and children." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "As for what belongs to me and to the Banu 'Abd al-Muttalib, it is yours. And when I have prayed Zuhr, stand up and say, 'We seek the help of the Messenger of Allah with regard to the believers, or the Muslims, concerning our women and children.'" When they prayed Zuhr, they stood up and said that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whatever belongs to me and to the Banu 'Abd al-Muttalib, it is yours." The Muhajirun said, "Whatever belongs to us is for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." The Ansar said, "Whatever belongs to us is for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Al-Aqra' b. Habis said, "As for me and Banu Tamim, no." 'Uyaynah b. Hisn said, "As for me and Banu Fazarah, no." Al-'Abbas b. Mirdas said, "As for me and Banu Sulaym, no." Banu Sulaym stood up and said, "You have lied; whatever belongs to us is for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O people, return to them their women and children. Whoever holds on to anything from this fay', he shall have six shares from the first thing Allah opens up for us." Then he mounted his riding beast and the people mounted. "Distribute our fay' among us," they said, and they pressed him until they forced him to a tree, and his cloak was snatched away. He said, "O people, give me back my cloak. By Allah, if you had cattle as numerous as the trees of Tihamah, I would distribute them among you, and you would not find me miserly, cowardly, or a liar." Then he came to a camel and took from its hump a hair between his two fingers, then said, "Here, indeed I have no share of the fay', not even this, except the fifth, and the fifth is returned to you." A man stood up to him with a bundle of hair and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I took this to repair the saddlecloth of a camel of mine." He said, "As for what belongs to me and to the Banu 'Abd al-Muttalib, it is yours." He said, "Has it come to this? Then I have no need of it," and he threw it away. He said, "O people, return even the needle and the thread, for ghulul (misappropriation) will be a disgrace, a shame, and a fire for its people on the Day of Resurrection."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No one takes back his gift except a father from his child. The one who takes back his gift is like the one who returns to his vomit."

✧ From Ibn Umar and Ibn Abbas, they traced the hadith back to the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "It is not lawful for a man to give a gift."

  4. al-Sunan al-Kubra (al-Nasa'i) 6485No grade recorded

✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, I think he said: "It is not lawful" — Husayn did not doubt anything in the hadith except in "it is lawful" — "to give a gift and then take it back, except a father in what he gives his child. The likeness of one who gives a gift and then takes it back is like a dog that eats until it is full, then vomits, and then returns to its vomit."
