✧ The affair of Muḥayyiṣah and Ḥuwayyiṣah [Ḥuwayyiṣah's blaming his brother Muḥayyiṣah for killing a Jew, then his conversion to Islam] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Whomever you overcome of the men of the Jews, kill him." So Muḥayyiṣah b. Masʿūd—Ibn Hishām said: (Muḥayyiṣah). And it is said: Muḥayyiṣah b. Masʿūd b. Kaʿb b. ʿĀmir b. ʿAdī b. Majdaʿah b. Ḥārithah b. al-Ḥārith b. al-Khazraj b. ʿAmr b. Mālik b. al-Aws—leaped upon Ibn Sunaynah—Ibn Hishām said: And it is said Subaynah—a man of the Jewish merchants, whom he used to associate with and trade with, and he killed him. At that time Ḥuwayyiṣah b. Masʿūd had not yet embraced Islam, and he was older than Muḥayyiṣah. When he killed him, Ḥuwayyiṣah began to beat him, saying: "O enemy of God, have you killed him? Indeed, by God, there is surely some fat in your belly from his wealth." Muḥayyiṣah said: I said: "By God, the one who commanded me to kill him is such that if he commanded me to kill you, I would strike your neck." He said: Then, by God, that was the first thing of Ḥuwayyiṣah's Islam. He said: "By God, if Muḥammad commanded you to kill me, would you kill me?" He said: "Yes, by God, if he commanded me to strike your neck, I would strike it." He said: "By God, a religion that has brought you to this is truly astonishing." Then Ḥuwayyiṣah embraced Islam. Ibn Isḥāq said: This ḥadīth was narrated to me by a client of Banū Ḥārithah, from the son of Muḥayyiṣah, from his father Muḥayyiṣah.

✧ [MUḤAYYIṢAH'S POETRY IN BLAMING HIS BROTHER FOR HIM] Muḥayyiṣah said concerning that: The son of my mother blames me; if I had been ordered to kill him, I would have struck his temple with a white, cutting blade, a sword like the color of salt, whose polishing was made pure; whenever I aim it, it is not false. And I would not be delighted that I killed you willingly while we had what is between Buṣrā and Maʾrib. [ANOTHER ACCOUNT OF ḤUWAYYIṢAH'S CONVERSION TO ISLAM] Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbaydah narrated to me from Abū ʿAmr al-Madanī, who said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ overcame the Banū Qurayẓah, he took from them about four hundred men of the Jews, and they were allies of the Aws against the Khazraj. The Messenger of God ﷺ ordered that their necks be struck, and the Khazraj began to strike their necks, and that pleased them. The Messenger of God ﷺ looked at the Khazraj, and their faces were rejoicing, and he looked at the Aws, but he did not see that among them. He thought that this was because of the alliance between the Aws and Banū Qurayẓah. There remained of Banū Qurayẓah only twelve men, so he handed them over to the Aws. He gave to every two men of the Aws one man of Banū Qurayẓah and said: "Let so-and-so strike, and let so-and-so finish off." Among those handed over to them was Kaʿb b. Yahūdhā, who was a great man among Banū Qurayẓah. He handed him over to Muḥayyiṣah b. Masʿūd and to Abū Burdah b. Niyār—and Abū Burdah was the one for whom the Messenger of God ﷺ gave permission to slaughter a jadhaʿah of goats for the sacrifice—and said: "Let Muḥayyiṣah strike him, and let Abū Burdah finish him off." Muḥayyiṣah struck him a blow that did not cut, and Abū Burdah finished him off and dispatched him. Then Ḥuwayyiṣah—who was an unbeliever—said to his brother Muḥayyiṣah: "Did you kill Kaʿb b. Yahūdhā?" He said: "Yes." Ḥuwayyiṣah said: "By God, how much fat has grown in your belly from his wealth! You are base, O Muḥayyiṣah." Muḥayyiṣah said to him: "The one who ordered me to kill him is the one who, if he ordered me to kill you, I would kill you." He was amazed at his words, then went away astonished. They mentioned that he began to wake at night and wonder at his brother Muḥayyiṣah's words, until morning came and he was saying: "By God, this is indeed a religion." Then he came to the Prophet ﷺ and embraced Islam. Muḥayyiṣah said about that some verses which we have written down.
