✧ [ The Messenger's ﷺ supplication to transfer the fever of Madinah to Mahya'ah ] ʿĀʾishah ؓ said: I mentioned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what I had heard from them, and I said: "They are indeed delirious and do not comprehend, due to the severity of the fever." She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Allah, make Madinah beloved to us as You made Makkah beloved to us, or more so; and bless us in its mudd and ṣāʿ; and transfer its fever to Mahyaʿah." Mahyaʿah is al-Juḥfah.

✧ [The hardship the Muslims suffered from the epidemic] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī mentions, on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Madinah, he and his Companions were struck by the fever of Madinah, until they were severely ill. Allah, exalted is He, turned that away from His Prophet ﷺ, so much so that they would only pray while sitting. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to them while they were praying in that manner and said to them: "Know that the prayer of one sitting is half of the prayer of one standing." He said: The Muslims then forced themselves to stand despite the weakness and sickness that was upon them, seeking the reward.

✧ Mention of those of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who fell ill. [The illness of Abu Bakr, ʿĀmir, and Bilāl, and the report of ʿĀʾishah about them]. Ibn Isḥāq said: Hishām b. ʿUrwah and ʿUmar b. ʿAbdallāh b. ʿUrwah related to me, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, from ʿĀʾishah ؓ, who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah, he arrived there when it was the most epidemic-ridden land of Allah with fever, and his Companions suffered affliction and sickness from it, but Allah, exalted is He, turned that away from His Prophet ﷺ. She said: Abu Bakr, ʿĀmir b. Fuhayrah, and Bilāl, the two clients of Abu Bakr, were with Abu Bakr in one house, and the fever struck them. I entered upon them to visit them—that was before the veil was imposed on us—and they had such severity of pain as none knows but Allah. I drew near to Abu Bakr and said to him: "How do you find yourself, O father?" He said: "Every man is struck down amidst his family, while death is nearer than the strap of his sandal." She said: I said: "By Allah, my father does not know what he is saying." She said: Then I drew near to ʿĀmir b. Fuhayrah and said to him: "How do you find yourself, O ʿĀmir?" He said: "I have found death before tasting it; the coward's fate comes upon him from above; every man is tried according to his strength, like the bull that protects its hide with its horn." Ibn Hishām said: He means "his capacity." She said: I said: "By Allah, ʿĀmir does not know what he is saying." She said: When the fever left Bilāl, he lay down in the courtyard of the house, then raised his voice in song and said: "Would that I knew whether I shall spend a night at Fakhkh, with idhkhir and jalīl around me; and whether I shall one day go down to the waters of Majinnah, and whether Shāmah and Ṭufayl will appear to me." Ibn Hishām said: Shāmah and Ṭufayl are two mountains near Makkah.
