Translation

✧ [The Messenger of Allah ﷺ offering himself to Banū ʿĀmir] Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Zuhrī narrated to me that he came to Banū ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah and called them to God, Mighty and Majestic, and offered himself to them. A man from among them—called Bayḥarah b. Firās; Ibn Hishām said: Firās b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Salamah (al-Khayr) b. Qushayr b. Kaʿb b. Rabīʿah b. ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah—said to him: "By God, if I could take this youth from Quraysh, I would devour the Arabs through him." Then he said: "Do you think that if we pledge allegiance to you for your cause, and then God makes you victorious over those who oppose you, will authority belong to us after you?" He said: "Authority belongs to God; He places it wherever He wills." He said: "So should we expose our throats to the Arabs for your sake, and then when God makes you victorious, authority will be for others? We have no need of your cause." So they refused him. When the people departed, Banū ʿĀmir returned to an old man of theirs who had become so advanced in age that he was unable to attend the fairs with them. Whenever they returned to him, they would tell him what had happened at the fair. When they came to him that year, he asked them about what had occurred at their fair. They said: "A youth from Quraysh came to us, then one of Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, claiming he is a prophet, calling us to protect him, stand with him, and bring him to our lands." He said: The old man placed his hands on his head and then said: "O Banū ʿĀmir, is there any way to undo this? Is there any means to catch its tail? By Him in whose hand the soul of so-and-so is, no descendant of Ishmael ever fabricated it, and it is certainly true. Where was your judgment?"
