  1. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 875Sahih

✧ I heard Ibn ʿUmar say: Two men from the east came as orators during the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ. They stood and spoke, then sat down. Then Thābit b. Qays, the orator of the Messenger of God ﷺ, stood and spoke. The people marveled at the speech of the two men. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ stood to deliver a sermon and said: “O people, say what you have to say, for excessive elaboration of speech is from Satan.” Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Indeed, some eloquence is sorcery.”

  2. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 876Sahih

✧ He heard Anas say: A man delivered a speech in the presence of ʿUmar and spoke at great length. ʿUmar said: “Indeed, excessive speech in sermons is from the drivel of Satan.”

  3. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 877Hasan

✧ The Prophet ﷺ said: “Gather in your mosques, and whenever a group gathers, let them inform me.” The first of those who came came to us and sat down. A speaker among us spoke, then said: “Praise be to God, besides whom praise has no goal and beyond whom there is no passage.” He became angry and left. We blamed one another among ourselves and said: “The first of those who came came to us, but he went to another mosque and sat in it.” So we went to him and spoke to him, and he came back with us and sat in his place—or near his place. Then he said: “Praise be to God, who places whatever He wills before Him and whatever He wills behind Him. Indeed, some eloquence is sorcery.” Then he commanded us and taught us.

  4. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 878Sahih

✧ ʿĀʾisha said: One night the Prophet ﷺ had insomnia and said: “Would that a righteous man from my Companions would come to me and guard me tonight.” Just then we heard the sound of a weapon. 8. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 882Sahih

✧ ʿĀʾisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, said: Some people asked the Prophet ﷺ about soothsayers. He said to them: “They are nothing.” They said: “O Messenger of God, they sometimes speak of something that comes true.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “That word of truth is snatched by a jinn, who cackles it into the ear of his ally like the cackling of a hen, and they mix it with more than a hundred lies.”

✧ From ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ who said: I am amazed at a man who flees from fate when it is about to befall him, yet he sees the speck in his brother's eye and leaves the log in his own. He removes rancor from his brother's soul while leaving rancor in his own. I have never confided a secret to anyone and then blamed him for divulging it. How could I blame him when I myself found it too burdensome to bear?

  13. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 887Weak
