35. Kunyas
عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ وُلِدَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنَّا غُلاَمٌ فَسَمَّاهُ الْقَاسِمَ فَقَالَتِ الأَنْصَارُ لاَ نُكَنِّيكَ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ وَلاَ نُنْعِمُكَ عَيْنًا فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهُ مَا قَالَتِ الأَنْصَارُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَحْسَنَتِ الأَنْصَارُ تَسَمُّوا بِاسْمِي وَلاَ تَكْتَنُوا بِكُنْيَتِي فَإِنَّمَا أَنَا قَاسِمٌ
✧ From Jabir: He said: A son was born to a man among us, and he named him al-Qasim. The Ansar said: We will not give you the kunya Abu al-Qasim, nor will we honor you. So he came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him what the Ansar had said. The Prophet ﷺ said: The Ansar did well. Name yourselves with my name, but do not use my kunya. I am only a Qasim.
سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ يَقُولُ كَانَتْ رُخْصَةً لِعَلِيٍّ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنْ وُلِدَ لِي بَعْدَكَ أُسَمِّيهِ بِاسْمِكَ وَأُكَنِّيهِ بِكُنْيَتِكَ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ
✧ I heard Ibn al-Hanafiyyah say: There was a concession for 'Ali. He said: O Messenger of Allah, if a child is born to me after you, may I name him with your name and give him your kunya? He said: Yes.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 844Hasan or sahih
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ نَجْمَعَ بَيْنَ اسْمِهِ وَكُنْيَتِهِ وَقَالَ أَنَا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ وَاللَّهُ يُعْطِي وَأَنَا أَقْسِمُ
✧ From Abu Hurayrah: He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from combining his name and his kunya. And he said: I am Abu al-Qasim; Allah gives, and I distribute.
عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فِي السُّوقِ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ فَالْتَفَتَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ دَعَوْتُ هَذَا فَقَالَ سَمُّوا بِاسْمِي وَلاَ تُكَنُّوا بِكُنْيَتِي
✧ From Anas: He said: The Prophet ﷺ was in the market, and a man said: O Abu al-Qasim! The Prophet ﷺ turned to him. He said: I was calling this one. He said: Name yourselves with my name, but do not use my kunya.
أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَلَغَ مَجْلِسًا فِيهِ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أُبَيِّ بْنُ سَلُولٍ وَذَلِكَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُسْلِمَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ فَقَالَ لاَ تُؤْذِينَا فِي مَجْلِسِنَا فَدَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ فَقَالَ أَيْ سَعْدُ أَلاَ تَسْمَعُ مَا يَقُولُ أَبُو حُبَابٍ؟ يُرِيدُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أُبَيٍّ ابْنَ سَلُولٍ
✧ He informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to a gathering in which was 'Abdullah b. Ubayy b. Salul, and that was before 'Abdullah b. Ubayy had accepted Islam. He said: Do not harm us in our gathering. Then the Prophet ﷺ entered upon Sa'd b. 'Ubadah and said: O Sa'd, do you not hear what Abu Hubab says? He meant 'Abdullah b. Ubayy b. Salul.
عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْنَا وَلِي أَخٌ صَغِيرٌ يُكَنَّى أَبَا عُمَيْرٍ وَكَانَ لَهُ نُغَرٌ يَلْعَبُ بِهِ فَمَاتَ فَدَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَرَآهُ حَزِينًا فَقَالَ مَا شَأْنُهُ؟ قِيلَ لَهُ مَاتَ نُغَرُهُ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا عُمَيْرٍ مَا فَعَلَ النُّغَيْرُ؟
✧ From Anas: He said: The Prophet ﷺ used to enter upon us, and I had a young brother who was given the kunya Abu 'Umayr. He had a small bird that he played with, and it died. The Prophet ﷺ entered and saw him sad, and said: What is the matter with him? It was said: His small bird died. He said: O Abu 'Umayr, what happened to the little bird?
أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ كَنَّى عَلْقَمَةَ أَبَا شِبْلٍ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ لَهُ
✧ 'Abdullah gave 'Alqamah the kunya Abu Shibl, although no child had been born to him.
عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ قَالَ كَنَّانِي عَبْدُ اللهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُولَدَ لِي
✧ From 'Alqamah: He said: 'Abdullah gave me a kunya before any child was born to me.
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ؓ قَالَتْ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَنَّيْتَ نِسَاءَكَ فَاكْنِنِي فَقَالَ تَكَنِّي بِابْنِ أُخْتِكِ عَبْدِ اللهِ
'A'isha said, "I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'Messenger of Allah, you give your wives kunyas, so give me a kunya.' He said, 'Take the kunya of your nephew, 'Abdullah.'"
أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ ؓ قَالَتْ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ أَلاَ تُكَنِّينِي؟ فَقَالَ اكْتَنِي بِابْنِكِ يَعْنِي عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ فَكَانَتْ تُكَنَّى أُمَّ عَبْدِ اللهِ
'A'isha said, "Prophet of Allah, will you not give me a kunya?" He said, "Use the kunya of your son," i.e. 'Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr. She was given the kunya Umm 'Abdullah.
أَنْ يُدْعَى بِهَا وَمَا سَمَّاهُ أَبَا تُرَابٍ إِلاَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ غَاضَبَ يَوْمًا فَاطِمَةَ فَخَرَجَ فَاضْطَجَعَ إِلَى الْجِدَارِ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ وَجَاءَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَتْبَعُهُ فَقَالَ هُوَ ذَا مُضْطَجِعٌ فِي الْجِدَارِ فَجَاءَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَقَدِ امْتَلَأَ ظَهْرُهُ تُرَابًا فَجَعَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَمْسَحُ التُّرَابَ عَنْ ظَهْرِهِ وَيَقُولُ اجْلِسْ أَبَا تُرَابٍ
Sahl ibn Sa'd related that the name which 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, liked best was Abu Turab and that he was happy when he was called that. Only the Prophet ﷺ called him that. One day 'Ali was cross with Fatima and went out and reclined against the wall of the mosque. The Prophet ﷺ came to look for him and was told that he was leaning against the wall. The Prophet ﷺ went up to him and found that his back was covered with dust. The Prophet ﷺ began to wipe the dust off his back and said, 'Sit down Abu Turab (father of dust)!'"
عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ بَيْنَمَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فِي نَخْلٍ لَنَا نَخْلٍ لأَبِي طَلْحَةَ تَبَرَّزَ لِحَاجَتِهِ وَبِلاَلٌ يَمْشِي وَرَاءَهُ يُكْرِمُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَنْ يَمْشِيَ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ فَمَرَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِقَبْرٍ فَقَامَ حَتَّى تَمَّ إِلَيْهِ بِلاَلٌ فَقَالَ وَيْحَكَ يَا بِلاَلُ هَلْ تَسْمَعُ مَا أَسْمَعُ؟ قَالَ مَا أَسْمَعُ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ صَاحِبُ هَذَا الْقَبْرِ يُعَذَّبُ فَوُجِدَ يَهُودِيًّا
✧ From Anas, who said: While the Prophet ﷺ was in a palm grove of ours—a palm grove of Abu Talha—he stepped aside to relieve himself, and Bilal walked behind him, honoring the Prophet ﷺ by not walking beside him. The Prophet ﷺ passed by a grave and stood until Bilal caught up to him. He said: "Woe to you, O Bilal, do you hear what I hear?" He said: "I do not hear anything." He said: "The occupant of this grave is being punished." He was found to be a Jew.
سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَقُولُ لأَخٍ لَهُ صَغِيرٍ أَرْدِفِ الْغُلاَمَ فَأَبَى فَقَالَ لَهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ بِئْسَ مَا أُدِّبْتَ قَالَ قَيْسٌ فَسَمِعْتُ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ يَقُولُ دَعْ عَنْكَ أَخَاكَ
✧ I heard Mu'awiya say to a young brother of his: "Seat the boy behind you on the camel." He refused, so Mu'awiya said to him: "How badly you have been disciplined!" Qays said: Then I heard Abu Sufyan say: "Leave your brother alone."
إِذَا كَثُرَ الأَخِلاَّءُ كَثُرَ الْغُرَمَاءُ قُلْتُ لِمُوسَى وَمَا الْغُرَمَاءُ؟ قَالَ الْحُقُوقُ
"When you have a lot of close friends, you have a lot of creditors." The transmitter asked Musa, "What are creditors?" "Rights owed," he replied.
