11. Good Conduct
✧ He heard Qabīṣa b. Burma al-Asadī say, "I was with the Prophet ﷺ and I heard him say, 'The people of good in this world are the people of good in the Hereafter, and the people of evil in this world are the people of evil in the Hereafter.'"
✧ He went out until he came to the Prophet ﷺ, and stayed with him until the Prophet ﷺ knew him. When he was about to leave, I said to myself, "By Allah, I will go to the Prophet ﷺ until I increase in knowledge." So I came walking until I stood before him and said, "What do you command me to do?" He said, "O Ḥarmala, do what is good and avoid what is evil." Then I returned until I came to the mount, then I came back and stood in my place near him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, what do you command me to do?" He said, "O Ḥarmala, do what is good and avoid what is evil. Consider what pleases your ear that people should say about you when you leave them, and do it; and consider what you would hate that people should say about you when you leave them, and avoid it." When I returned, I reflected, and found that these two had left nothing out.

✧ Muʿtamir said: I mentioned to my father the ḥadīth of Abū ʿUthmān from Salmān, that he said, "The people of good in this world are the people of good in the Hereafter." He said, "I heard it from Abū ʿUthmān narrating it from Salmān, and I knew that it was so, and I have never narrated it to anyone."
✧ The Prophet ﷺ said, "Every good action is charity."
✧ The Prophet ﷺ said, "Every Muslim must give sadaqa." They said, "And if he cannot find anything?" He said, "He should work with his hands, benefit himself, and give sadaqa." They said, "And if he cannot, or does not do it?" He said, "Then he should help a needy, distressed person." They said, "And if he does not do it?" He said, "Then he should enjoin good, or enjoin what is right." They said, "And if he does not do it?" He said, "Then he should refrain from evil, for that is sadaqa for him."
✧ He informed him that he asked the Messenger of God ﷺ, "Which action is best?" He said, "Faith in God and jihad in His path." He said, "Which slaves are best?" He said, "The most expensive in price and the most precious to their owners." He said, "What do you think if I do not do it?" He said, "You help a lost person or make something for an unskilled person." He said, "What do you think if I do not do it?" He said, "You spare people from evil, for that is a sadaqa you give on behalf of yourself."
✧ From Abū Dharr, who said: It was said, "O Messenger of God, the wealthy have taken the rewards: they pray as we pray, fast as we fast, and give sadaqa from the surplus of their wealth." He said, "Has God not made for you what you can give as sadaqa? Indeed, every glorification and every praise is a sadaqa, and the sexual intercourse of one of you is a sadaqa." It was said, "In his desire, there is a sadaqa?" He said, "If he were to place it in what is forbidden, would he not have a burden of sin? Likewise, if he places it in what is lawful, he has a reward."
✧ From Abū Barza al-Aslamī, who said: I said, "O Messenger of God, direct me to an action that will admit me into the Garden." He said, "Remove harmful things from people's path."
Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, "A man came across a thorn in the road and said, 'I will remove this thorn so that it does not harm a Muslim man.' For that reason he was forgiven."
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "The deeds of my community, their good and their evil, were shown to me. I found among the good of their deeds that harmful things are removed from the path, and I found among the evil of their deeds spittle in the mosque that is not buried."

✧ From Anas, who said: When the Prophet ﷺ was brought something, he would say, "Take it to so-and-so, for she was a friend of Khadīja. Take it to the house of so-and-so, for she used to love Khadīja."

✧ There was something between Ḥudhayfa and Salmān, so he came to him seeking him. He was told that he was in a vegetable garden of his, so he went towards him and met him carrying a basket with vegetables, having inserted his staff into the handle of the basket, and it was on his shoulder. He said, "O Abū ʿAbdullāh, what was between you and Ḥudhayfa?" He said, "Salmān says: 'Man was ever hasty' (17:11)." So they set off until they came to Salmān's house. Salmān entered the house and said, "Peace be upon you," then gave permission to Abū Qurra, who entered. There was a rug placed at the door, and at its head were bricks, and there was a cushion. He said, "Sit on the bedding of your mistress that she spreads for herself." Then he began to tell him, saying, "Ḥudhayfa used to relate things that the Messenger of God ﷺ said in his anger about certain people. I was approached and asked about them, and I said, 'Ḥudhayfa knows best what he says,' and I disliked that there be grudges between people. Ḥudhayfa was approached and told, 'Salmān neither confirms nor denies what you say.' So Ḥudhayfa came to me and said, 'O Salmān, son of Salmān's mother!' I said, 'O Ḥudhayfa, son of Ḥudhayfa's mother! You will stop, or I will write about you to ʿUmar.' When I threatened him with ʿUmar, he left me alone. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'Of the children of Adam, I am one. Whichever servant of my community I curse with a curse or insult with an insult without cause, make it a blessing upon him.'"
Ibn 'Abbas said, " 'Umar said, 'Let us go forth to the land of our people.' Ubayy ibn Ka'b and I were at the back of the people. A cloud gathered. Ubayy said, 'O Allah, remove its harm from us!' We met the people and their mounts were wet. They said, 'What fell on us did not fall on you!' I said, 'He asked Allah Almighty to remove its harm from us.' 'Umar said, 'Why didn't you include us in your supplication?'"
✧ From Abū Salama, who said: I came to Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, and he was a friend of mine. I said, "Will you not go out with us to the palm trees?" He went out wearing a khammīṣa of his.
✧ I heard ʿAlī, may the blessings of God be upon him, say: The Prophet ﷺ ordered ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd to climb a tree and bring him something from it. His companions looked at ʿAbdullāh's legs and laughed at their thinness. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "What are you laughing at? The leg of ʿAbdullāh is heavier in the balance than Uḥud."
