✧ Two men went out on a journey, and the prayer time came while they had no water with them. They performed tayammum with clean earth and prayed. Then they found water afterward within the time, so one of them repeated the prayer with ablution and the other did not repeat. Then they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that. He said to the one who did not repeat, “You have followed the Sunnah and your prayer is sufficient for you.” And he said to the one who performed ablution and repeated, “You have the reward twice.”

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Abū Daʾūd

machine translationOthers than Ibn Nāfiʿ narrate it from al-Layth, from ʿUmayrah b. Abī Nājiyah, from Bakr b. Sawādah, from ʿAṭāʾ, from the Prophet, as mursal. The mention of Abū Saʿīd in it is an error (wahm) and is not preserved (maḥfūẓ).

    in مسند الدارمي, p. 768
  • Ibn al-Qaṭṭān

machine translationThe one who gave it a connected chain dropped a man from the chain, namely ʿUmayrah, so it becomes broken (munqaṭiʿ). As for the one who transmitted it as mursal, ʿUmayrah is in it along with the omission, and he is of unknown condition (majhūl al-ḥāl). He said: But Abū ʿAlī b. al-Sakan narrated it: Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Wāsiṭī narrated to us, ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad narrated to us, Abū al-Walīd al-Ṭayālisī narrated to us, al-Layth b. Saʿd narrated to us, from ʿAmr b. al-Ḥārith and ʿUmayrah b. Abī Nājiyah, from Bakr b. Sawādah, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Abū Saʿīd, that two men set out on a journey... the hadith. He said: So he connected what is between al-Layth and Bakr through ʿAmr b. al-Ḥārith, who is trustworthy (thiqah), paired him with ʿUmayrah, and gave it a connected chain by mentioning Abū Saʿīd.

    in مسند الدارمي, p. 768
  • Sulaymān b. Aḥmad al-Ṭabarānī

machine translationNo one narrated it from al-Layth with a connected chain except ʿAbdullāh b. Nāfiʿ; al-Musayyabī was alone in transmitting it.

    in مسند الدارمي, p. 768
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationʿAbdullāh b. Nāfiʿ was alone in narrating it from al-Layth with this chain, connected. Ibn al-Mubārak and others contradicted him and did not mention Abū Saʿīd.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationAl-Nasāʾī narrated it both as musnad and as mursal, and al-Dāraquṭnī narrated it connected, then said: ʿAbdullāh b. Nāfiʿ was alone in narrating it from al-Layth, from Bakr b. Sawādah, from ʿAṭāʾ, from him, connected. Ibn al-Mubārak contradicted him and transmitted it as mursal. Likewise al-Ṭabarānī said in al-Awsaṭ: No one narrated it connected except ʿAbdullāh b. Nāfiʿ; al-Musayyabī was alone in transmitting it from him. Mūsā b. Hārūn said, as related by Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Ayman from him: Raising it to the Prophet (marfūʿ) was an error (wahm) on the part of Ibn Nāfiʿ. Abū Dāwūd said: Others narrated it from al-Layth, from ʿUmayrah b. Abī Nājiyah, from Bakr, from ʿAṭāʾ, as mursal. He said: The mention of Abū Saʿīd in it is not preserved (maḥfūẓ).
