Sunan ad-Darimi 43

Translation

✧ From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, did you hear it from him? I narrate it from you. Jabir said: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of the Trench, digging it. We remained three days without tasting food and could not get any. A hard patch appeared in the trench, so I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, this hard patch has appeared in the trench.' We sprinkled water on it. The Prophet ﷺ stood up, his belly wrapped with a stone, and took the pickaxe or the shovel. Then he pronounced the name of Allah three times and struck, and it turned into a pile of loose sand. When I saw that from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, permit me to go.' He said, 'So he permitted me. I went to my wife and said, 'May your mother lose you! I have seen something from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that I cannot bear to keep secret. Do you have anything?' She said, 'I have a sa' of barley and a young she-goat.' He said, 'We ground the barley, slaughtered the goat, skinned it, put it in the pot, and kneaded the barley.' He said, 'Then I returned to the Prophet ﷺ and stayed for a while. Then I asked his permission a second time, and he permitted me. I came and found the dough ready, so I told her to bake, and I placed the pot on the stones.' Abu Abd al-Rahman said, 'It is only the athafi (stones), but this is how he said it.' Then I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'We have a little food. If you see fit, come with me, you and one man or two men with you.' He said, 'How much is it?' I said, 'A sa' of barley and a young she-goat.' He said, 'Return to your family and tell her not to remove the pot from the stones and not to take the bread out of the oven until I come.' Then he said to the people, 'Get up and go to the house of Jabir.' He said, 'I felt ashamed with a shame that only Allah knows, and I said to my wife, 'May your mother lose you! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has come to you with all his companions.' She said, 'Did the Prophet ﷺ ask you how much food there was?' I said, 'Yes.' She said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best. You told him what we had.' He said, 'Some of what I had been feeling left me, and I said, 'You have spoken the truth.' The Prophet ﷺ came and entered, then said to his companions, 'Do not crowd.' Then he invoked blessing over the oven and the pot. He said, 'We began taking bread from the oven and meat from the pot, crumbling and ladling for them. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Let seven or eight sit at each platter.' When they ate, we uncovered the oven and the pot, and they were fuller than before. We kept doing that; each time we opened the oven and uncovered the pot, we found them fuller than before, until all the Muslims were full and a portion of food remained. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us, 'The people have been stricken with hunger, so eat and feed others.' We continued that day eating and feeding.' He said, 'And he informed me that they were eight hundred or he said three hundred.' Ayman said, 'I do not know which of the two.'
