✧ Nāfiʿ b. ʿAbd al-Ḥārith met ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb at ʿUsfān—and ʿUmar had appointed him over the people of Makkah—so he greeted ʿUmar. ʿUmar said to him, “Whom did you leave as your deputy over the people of the valley?” Nāfiʿ said, “I left Ibn Abzā as deputy over them.” ʿUmar said, “And who is Ibn Abzā?” He said, “A mawlā from among our mawālī.” ʿUmar said, “You left a mawlā as deputy over them?” He said, “O Commander of the Believers, indeed he is a reciter of the Book of Allah, knowledgeable in the obligatory shares (farāʾiḍ).” ʿUmar said, “Indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Indeed Allah raises with this Book some peoples and lowers with it others.’”
