✧ The example of the one who was given faith and was not given the Qur’an is the example of the date-palm: its taste is good and it has no smell. The example of the one who was given the Qur’an and was not given faith is the example of the basil (rayhānah al-āsah): its smell is pleasant and its taste is bitter. The example of the one who was given the Qur’an and faith is the example of the citron (utrujjah): its smell is pleasant and its taste is pleasant. The example of the one who was not given faith nor the Qur’an is the example of the colocynth (ḥanẓalah): its smell is foul and its taste is foul.
