✧ The Prophet ﷺ, when he delivered a sermon, would stand and prolong the standing, and it was hard for him to stand for so long. A trunk of a palm tree was brought, a hole was dug for it, and it was set upright beside him for the Prophet ﷺ. Whenever the Prophet ﷺ delivered a sermon and the standing became long for him, he would lean on it and support himself against it. A man who had come to Madinah saw him standing beside that trunk and said to the people near him, 'If I knew that Muhammad would thank me for something that would give him comfort, I would make for him a seat on which he could stand; then if he wished he could sit as long as he liked, and if he wished he could stand.' This reached the Prophet ﷺ and he said, 'Bring him to me.' They brought him, and he ordered him to make for him these three or four steps that are now on the pulpit of Madinah. The Prophet ﷺ found relief in that. When the Prophet ﷺ left the trunk and went to this thing that had been made for him, the trunk grieved and yearned as a she-camel yearns when the Prophet ﷺ parted from it.
