What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

الأحاديث الواردة في صفة التيمم لم يصح منها سوى حديث أبي جهيم وعمار وما عداهما فضعيف أو مختلف في رفعه ووقفه والراجح عدم رفعه

machine translationOf the narrations that describe the manner of tayammum, none is authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) except the hadith of Abū Juhaym and that of ʿAmmār. Everything other than these two is either weak (ḍaʿīf) or disputed as to whether it is raised (marfūʿ) or stopped (mawqūf), and the preponderant view is that it is not raised.

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 675
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

الثابت في حديث أبي جهيم لفظ يديه لا ذراعيه فإنها رواية شاذة

machine translationWhat is established in the hadith of Abū Juhaym is the wording "his hands", not "his forearms", for the latter is an anomalous (shādhdh) narration.
