Tamīm al-Dārī and ʿAdī b. Baddāʾ used to travel to Mecca for trade. A man from Banū Sahm set out and died in a land where there was no Muslim, and he made a bequest to the two of them. They handed his estate over to his family, but kept back a silver bowl inlaid with gold. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made them swear: "You have not concealed anything, and you have not found out anything." Then the bowl was recognized in Mecca, and they said: "We bought it from ʿAdī b. Baddāʾ and Tamīm." Then two men from the relatives of the Sahmī came and swore by Allah that this bowl belonged to the Sahmī, and "our testimony is more truthful than their testimony, and we have not transgressed; for then we would indeed be among the wrongdoers" (al-Māʾidah 107). So they took the bowl, and this verse was revealed concerning them.
